This trip introduce you to the Senkwekwe Centre, the world’s only facility for orphaned mountain gorillas. With expert staff who provide daily care for the orphans, who were each separated from their family due to the impact of poaching, the Senkwekwe Centre is a unique sanctuary offering the gorillas the chance to lead happy and secure lives in their forested enclosure.

The Senkwekwe Center also plays a critical role in rehabilitating orphaned eastern lowland gorillas confiscated from animal traffickers. Once rehabilitated, these gorilla orphans are transferred to the GRACE facility for eastern lowland gorillas also located in eastern DRC. A part from this, you get introduced to the Lava Lake and Gorilla trekking activity.

Tour Itinerary

DAY01

Arrival and Transfer to Mikeno Lodge

Arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will get transfered to Goma and drive to Mikeno Lodge. Meals and overnight at Mikeno Lodge.

DAY02

First Gorilla Trekking experience

Morning breakfast and transfer to bukima ranger post where Gorilla trekking activity starts. Go for this amazing adventure and overnight at Ngila.

DAY03

Second Gorilla Trek

This is another thriling day where you get the second chance to spend more time with the Gorillas. Start with morning breakfast, you will transfer to the ranger post for visiting the second gorilla family in Virunga. Trek for about 2 to 3 hours depending on on how far the gorilla family is at that day. After the trek, your driver will be waiting for you to transfer to Mikeno lodge for lunch. Relax in the afternoon at the Mikeno Lodge compound with and enjoy the breeze and views while reading books until it is dinner time. Dinner and overnight at Mikeno Lodge.

DAY04

Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage

Visit the world’s only gorilla orphanage center. Mountain gorillas are arguably the most fascinating creatures in the wild. The opportunity of spotting them attracts thousands of tourists to Africa each year. There are only three countries where mountain gorillas can be sighted Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Though the gorillas look the same in all three countries, it is a different experience tracking the gorillas in each national park. One of the advantages of tracking mountain gorillas in DR Congo’s Virunga National Park is the opportunity of visiting the only orphanage for mountain gorillas in the world afterwards.

Afterwads, relax and get prepared for Nyiragongo hike. All meals and overnight at Mikeno lodge

DAY05

Nyiragongo Hike

After breakfast at Mikeno lodge, go for Nyiragongo Trailhead to start your hike to this active volcano. Your will hire your porter, get hiking stick and Nyiragongo backpack and set out on your 6 hours up to this volcano mountain with stop overs on the way up. Upon reaching the summit, early evening hours will be great with beautiful sunset at the top of Mount Nyiragongo. Have dinner and enjoy the night at the summit of Nyiragogo.

DAY06

Descend the Volcanoe and transfer to Kigali

Waking up early to enjoy the wee morning hours at the top of the volcano, enjoy the views and have your breakfast shortly before you set off on your descent back to the trailhead. Reach the trail head at about 12pm and drive to exit Congo and drive back to Kigali international Airport or Hotel in Kigali.
